In-Person Field Trip

Witness the creative spirit of people from around the world through music. MIM’s galleries showcase instruments from every country, and students can see and hear musical traditions through video recordings built into every display. Choose from four tour options, each of which align with Arizona’s early learning and K–12 academic standards.

Discovery: Music plays an essential role in culture, and instruments reveal important stories about people and their environments. Discover how music crosses borders and boundaries and explore similarities and differences in sounds, instruments, and cultures while immersed in MIM’s Geographic Galleries.

Celebrating Community: Music fosters community, cultural identity, and wellness by bringing people together. Whether through singing and playing instruments or telling stories and dancing, global communities make music in a variety of ways. Students explore diverse community ensembles by visiting MIM’s Geographic Galleries.

¡Fiestas! Latin America: Traverse the Americas to celebrate the immense diversity of Latin American cultures and music. Trace the historical roots of instruments made iconic by the global spread of Latin Jazz, salsa, cumbia, and other genres and rhythms. From national street festivals to community rituals, students will encounter Latin American music and dance in traditional contexts. Learn about international recording artists and local musicians who sustain the region’s heritage.

STEM: How Science Brings Music to Life: How do musical instruments work, how are they made, and how can science, technology, engineering, and math answer these questions? Through hands-on experiments and gallery exploration, students will learn about vibration, programming, the transfer of energy, and the mathematics of pitch. Find your inner scientist while traveling the world of music!
