Schools can choose from three available tour options during the 2018-19 school year. Tours begin at 10:00 am and are held Tuesday – Friday. See below for descriptions and tour availability.

Tour Option #1: ART + JAZZ and SCIENCE: STEAM Tour 

Discover the intersection of visual expression, invention and the science of sound. Students will visit three exhibits: Ko Mo, displaying Joe Willie Smith’s invented musical sound creations; Eras of Jazz, a visual music installation by synesthesia artist Reyes Padilla and Jazz It Up, featuring works inspired by this uniquely American art form. Trained Docents will encourage students to use observation, experimentation and critical thinking to make connections between the visual arts, music and science.

Tour Option #2: Culture and Context: Jazz in Art Tour

Explore the visual expression of a uniquely American art form from different artistic perspectives. Students will visit 3-4 exhibits: Faith Ringgold, Jazz Stories; Crazy Vibes and Thangs by Illustrator Frank Morrison; Jazz it Up, a group exhibition, and Eras of Jazz, a visual music installation by synesthesia artist Reyes Padilla. Trained Docents will encourage students to use close observation, personal communication and critical thinking to make connections and discover meaning in contemporary works of art.

Tour Option #3: Tradition and Innovation: Contemporary Craft Tour

Engage with the finest in current craftworks from across the country and discover the art of making. The 40th Annual Contemporary Crafts has become a benchmark exhibition showcasing traditional mediums including ceramics, fibers, metals, wood, glass, jewelry, papermaking and book arts. Trained Docents will guide students in the discovery and discussion of innovative expressions using traditional methods of creating.

Additional 60 minutes | $3.50 per student (paid to Mesa Arts) | Grades K-8
ARTime activities expand and enhance a tour visit with art making directly inspired by gallery artists.

Careers in Art Tour
Additional 30 minutes | Grades 9-12
The Careers in Art Tour is led by Museum staff and details a variety of professions and the educational path required to achieve success in a museum setting.

Lunch Options: The Mesa Arts Center has many open and inviting spaces that make good places to hold a brown bag lunch. NO prior arrangements for lunch accommodations are needed.
