Act One Featured in March Desert Leaf Magazine
Act One was featured in the “Heart of the Matter” article of Tucson’s Desert Leaf Magazine in March 2020. Read the article by Jan Henrikson.
The student nervously eyed the lobby of UArizona’s Centennial Hall. “I don’t belong here,” he told his teacher. “This is too fancy for me.” His class was on an educational arts field trip with Act One, a nonprofit that offers K–12 students in Title 1 schools in Pima and Maricopa counties the opportunity to enjoy live dances, symphonies, plays, museums, and other art events.
Title 1 schools are those with at least 40 percent of their students on the federal free and reduced lunch program. After the show, “[the students] walked out of there with so much excitement and the feeling that he belonged,” says Juliet Martin, Act One’s vice president of strategies and programs.
And why not? Art belongs to everybody, regardless of income, whether they do or don’t want to become an actor, musician, painter, or dancer one day. READ FULL ARTICLE
