Act One Brings Nearly 36,000 on Arts Field Trips Before COVID-19 Restrictions Close Schools, Arts Venues
Nearly 36,000 students and chaperones attended 200 Act One field trips in the 2019-20 school year before COVID-19 closures necessitated canceling all remaining field trips after March 13, 2020. Act One was on pace to bring nearly 47,000 students and chaperones on arts field trips to performances and museums before the cancellations, the most it has ever brought on field trips.
“When we began the 2019-20 school year, we had no idea how it would end. In our wildest imaginations, we couldn’t have dreamed up the current situation,” said Act One Executive Director Bernadette Carroll. “Yet, Act One is still dedicated to ensuring that all students are able to experience the arts no matter their personal circumstances, and no matter what the world hands us.”
In total, Act One worked with 254 schools, including 185 in Metro Phoenix, 59 in the Tucson area and 10 that came from outlying areas. Students attended 82 performances and 118 museum/attraction tours. Twenty-five performances took place in Tucson, while schools attended 57 performances in Metro Phoenix. Museum tours totaled 20 in Tucson and 98 in Phoenix.
This year, Act One worked with 53 arts partners to bring students on field trips — 31 in Metro Phoenix, 21 in Tucson and one (Arizona Theatre Company) in both markets.
“While we don’t know what the next arts season and school year will look like, we’re working with our arts partners, schools and teachers to determine ways that we can continue to connect Title 1 schools with arts experiences,” Carroll said.
Act One is sharing educational content from its arts partners via social media as much as possible and encourages everyone interested in arts education and arts activities to like and follow them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @act1az.
